On Learning From Her Mistakes:
“[The old Lucy] was confused. I would say things I wouldn’t normally say, or date people I knew I shouldn’t be dating, or go places I know I shouldn’t be at—just making bad decisions and mistakes. Not to say I still don’t make mistakes all the time, but I feel like I’m heading in the right direction.”

Recovering On Her Eating Disorder:
“I’m so unbelievably lucky that I’m not like that anymore because it is a horrible way of life and it’s miserable. It consumes everything you think about and you can’t pursue things you want to do…I used to spend so many wasted days being depressed and feeling gross….I learned you have to be happy. People who are the happiest are the most beautiful.”

Lucy On Staying Positive:
“I’ve weeded out the negative people and now only surround myself with people who uplift me…I know what I have to offer and I feel good about it…I never understood jealousy. I’m a girls’ girl. I want to be happy for you and root for you. Everyone’s given different gifts and different blessings for a reason and I just think that so much wasted energy goes into [jealousy]. All the energy you use for being jealous could have been used for something really great.”

On Her New Music:
“My album is something I’m really, really, reallyproud of. I’ve intentionally been quiet about it because I want the music to speak for itself. People are either going to love it or hate it. But I think that once they hear it, they’ll be like, ‘Okay, she loves this and is serious about it.’ This is my pride and joy—it’s my baby! I worked my butt off on it.”

On Chris Zylka:
“I was just telling [my best friend] the other day that I don’t know what it’s going to take for me to want to date someone again. It just seems so exhausting. When I like someone, I fall really hard and I invest everything. When it’s gone, I’m like ‘I’m never doing that again!’”

When it came time to dress Pretty Little Liars stars Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell and Troian Bellisario for this week’s issue of EW, stylist Emma Trask called on the ABC Family show’s costume designer Mandi Line for pointers.

“I spoke to Mandi and she described the vibe that she goes for on the show,” says Trask. “What we ended up with is a blend of [each girl's] personal style and the look of her character.”

Trask and EW Senior Associate Photo Editor Matthew Levinson sifted through photos from teen queen classics like Clueless, The Craft, and Heathers looking for inspiration, finally settling on Mean Girls as a reference point for the cover shot.

In addition to the “nude, pastel palette” for the cover photo, Trask also pulled a variety of colorful dresses and metallic pieces for the shoot. “[We also did] a jewel-toned look, because it pops,” Trask says of the above photo of Hale (in Mandalay), Benson (in Ted Baker), Mitchell (in Issa), and Bellisario (in Bao Tranchi).
